SPARKS, Okla. (AP) Scientists say aftershocks from the weekend's 5.6 magnitude earthquake could continue to rattle Oklahoma for weeks or even months.
Geologists now believe a magnitude 4.7 earthquake on Saturday morning was a foreshock to the bigger one that followed that night. They recorded at least 10 aftershocks by midmorning Sunday and expect more. Researchers say pinpointing a fault line may be difficult since the systems east of the Rocky Mountains haven't been studied as much as those in the West.
The Oklahoma Corporation Commission says there are nearly 200 injection wells in the county where most of the weekend quakes happened. But natural gas companies say there's no proof the wells and the earthquakes are connected. And a study from an Oklahoma Geological Survey seismologist seems to back that up.
